Please have any pathology or radiology tests competed if requested during your appointment. Take your normal medications unless told otherwise by Dr Murray or the anaesthetist. If you are having intravenous sedation you will need to fast for six hours prior to the procedure. Please ensure someone has been arranged to drive you home as you cannot drive following the sedation.
After administration of the sedation and/or local anaesthetic a flexible cystoscopy is performed. A stent grasping forcep is placed down the working channel of the flexible cystoscope. The bladder end of the stent is grasped then the flexible cystoscope along with the stent is removed.
A short period of time is required in the recovery room while the sedation wears off. You may experience discomfort or pain in the flank and/or bladder, pain medication will be given by the nursing staff if required. Expect to see some blood in the urine and experience a burning sensation when voiding, this should resolve within 24 hours.
Dr Murray will see you prior to discharge and confirm follow up arrangements.
Complications following stent removal are uncommon. Risks include, but are not limited to:
1. Pain in the flank
2. Haematuria (blood in the urine)
3. Dysuria (stinging sensation when voiding)
4. Urinary urge and frequency
5. Urinary tract infection
6. Ongoing ureteric blockage and the need to re-insert a stent
